The New Sound of Sample Management: Nanoliter Dispensing from Sample Tubes with the Labcyte Echo Liquid Handler

Presented by: Jaclyn Greimann, Ph.D., Field Applications Scientist, Mid-Atlantic Region, Labcyte Inc

The Echo Liquid Handler is essential to sample management and drug screening workflows because of its high throughput, accuracy and unmatched precision. We now present the Echo 655T Echo Liquid Handler that has the same reliable capabilities of the Echo 555 series—transferring nanoliter volumes from 384-well and 1536-well microplates—but with the added capacity of transferring from Echo Qualified sample tubes. With the launch of this new system, Labcyte now offers the ability to use acoustic transfer throughout the entire drug discovery workflow, from sample storage tube transfer to initial screening; from hit confirmation to lead compound EC50 validation assays.

In order to optimize the use of the Echo Liquid Handlers, we offer robotics integration through the Access platforms. These systems are the most efficient way to automate Echo protocols, offering scalable integrations to meet personalized throughput and workflow needs. From a simple plate-handling system to our new Access Single and Dual Robot Systems, Labcyte’s automation platforms maximize the throughput of the Echo while minimizing hands-on user time. With the launch of the Echo 655T and the expansion of the Access integration platforms, Labcyte now offers a fully acoustic sample management solution that increases data quality and throughput, improves sample integrity, while minimizing reagent usage for even the most complicated assays.

New Hybrid Tubes for Larger Volume Sample Storage and Automation

Presented by: Ed Sheridan, Director of Sales and Marketing, Micronic America

We're proud to introduce our 2.00ml and 3.00ml Hybrid tubes. The two innovative tubes provide a better alternative to traditional cryo tubes. The new tubes guarantee sample traceability, optimize working volume and increase overall sample storage efficiency. The transparent parts of the tube walls enable easy visual checking of the sample, while the 4 coding concepts guarantee sample traceability. Samples can be identified with the 2D Data-Matrix, 1D barcode, numeric human readable and by the written codes on the white surface of the tube. The external thread and flat bottom of the 2.00ml and 3.00ml hybrid tubes allow for an optimal volume of material to be stored inside. The tubes can store more sample material, while occupying the same amount of storage space, in comparison to traditional cryo tubes. Additionally, the extremely versatile hybrid tubes are compatible with ANSI / SLAS format racks, standard cryo boxes, automated stores, code readers and liquid handlers.

The Latest Automation Technology for Larger Volume Labware Workflows

Presented by: Michael Girardi, Vice President, Marketing and Sales, Hamilton Storage

As the trend in the market to use larger labware continues to grow, laboratories need the ability to process these samples quickly and efficiently, as well as securely store them. The new 6-channel decapping head on the LabElite decapping devices is the first in the market to automatically decap and recap large format tubes such as the Nunc™ Low Profile 5.0 mL Externally-Threaded Universal Tubes. Many researchers prefer the large format tube geometry as it enables storage of solid and liquid samples up to several milliliters, with easy access using forceps or standard-length pipette tips. On top of the tube geometry benefits, the automated processing step allows researchers to increase sample throughput, refocus attention on higher value activities and reduce or eliminate the risks of sample mishandling or contamination compared to manual methods. The 6-channel head is ideal for applications in biobanking, agriculture, genomics, biotechnology, pharmaceutical, clinical and more.

To securely store samples, researchers can use the new SAM HD system—an automated sample storage system that stores samples down to -80°C. The SAM HD has the ability to store multiple sizes of tube types in one system, as well increasing the amount of tubes that can be stored using Hamilton Storage’s RackWare high-density racks. By using automation to process and store large volume samples, the process becomes more efficient, samples are secure and maintain their integrity, and it allows scientists to use their time to focus on the more important tasks, such as research.

High-throughput spheroid culture with magnetic 3D bioprinting

Presented by: Caroline Fanslau, Account Manager, Greiner Bio-One North America, Inc

Three-dimensional (3D) cell culture has gained prominence as researchers seek to recreate native tissue structure and function in vitro better than traditional two-dimensional (2D) methods. These platforms are so significantly recapitulating native environments that there is increasing interested in adapting these platforms to high-throughput workflows. Magnetic 3D bioprinting for 3D cell culture escapes the limits of speed and handling of traditional 3D methods. The basis of this platform is the magnetization of cells and subsequent 3D culture assembly with magnetic forces, which allows uniform creating of spheroids that fit the dimensions of HTS assay plates. Further, magnetized spheroids can also be held down with magnets enabling easy media exchange and liquid handling. In this presentation, we will discuss our results in in vitro assay development for high-throughput (384 and 1536w applications), showing that magnetic 3D bioprinting is a 3D cell culture platform that is rapid, easy to handle, and scalable for HTS.

BioTek’s Automated Media Exchange (AMX) module on the MultiFloFX

Presented by: Vram Derohannessian, Sr. Sales Representative, BioTek Instruments, Inc

Spheroidal 3D cell culture is increasingly common for many research areas as it better mimics the in vivo environment. It can be challenging to perform media exchanges and washes without accidental cell structure loss.

BioTek’s patent-pending AMX™ module for the MultiFlo™ FX enables gentle automated media exchange to protect and encourage proliferation of spheroids, tumoroids and other 3D cell structures, 2D and suspension cells in microplate-based assays The AMX module uses both peristaltic pumps, one to dispense and one to aspirate media from the plate wells. The software operates the pumps slowly and gently so cells and cell structures aren’t disturbed during the media exchange, and the x-y-z positions for the aspirate and dispense tubes are adjustable to avoid contact, etc with cell structures in the wells.

Reducing Plastic Consumable Waste in the Laboratories through Financially Viable Solutions

Presented by: Ali Safavi, Founder & CEO, Grenova

Plastic waste is a growing issue for our planet and labs in the life sciences industry are becoming a large contributor to this ongoing problem. In 2015, Urbina, et. al. estimated labs contributed 5.5 million tons of single use plastics a year to the waste problem. As more labs adopt new technology and automation strategies, plastic consumables waste will continue to grow as well. By the end of 2018, it is estimated that over 77 million pounds of pipette tips will be discarded into our landfill – that’s enough tips to circle the earth over 10 times, or produce 223 million kWh of electricity, which would be sufficient to power over 20,852 homes in the US. Additionally, the cost of these consumables and their disposal is a drain on laboratory budgets. Implementing Grenova pipette tip cleaning technology helps. This easily aligns with overall laboratory budgetary goals resulting in financial gain and plastic waste reduction. To date, Grenova has helped labs safely, and without any compromise to the assay results, save over $4.3 million and over 178,000 lbs. of what would have been landfill waste. This makes pipette tip re-use not only feasible, but financially and socially sustainable.

Reduce Assay Variability with Pipette Training

Presented by: Melinda Gold, Ph.D., Product Manager, Artel

Pipettes and other liquid handling devices are at the core of many life science assays and experiments and many of us scientists’ pipette in an almost subconscious way. After a bit of practice initially, typically there isn’t too much thought given to all the subtleties of good pipetting technique. While instrument and operator qualifications are habitually addressed in regulated laboratory environments, seemingly simple instruments such as handheld pipettes have a propensity to be overlooked, and their potentially compromising effects on data quality are often not considered. Many laboratories work under the assumption that operators will exercise good pipetting techniques without subjecting them to a specialized training and subsequent competency assessment program. Despite many QA departments emphasizing the importance of the actual pipettes specified accuracy and repair and maintenance schedules, training operators to use the pipettes in an educated and most effective way is frequently neglected. Proper pipette performance is essential to generating data that are both reliable and reproducible therefore there is a strong argument for incorporating a training and proficiency testing program for pipetting in every lab that values accuracy and precision and wants to reduce rework.

Automated Sample Preparation for Biopharmaceutical Analysis: Removing Inefficiencies and Variability

Presented by: Kenda LJ Evans, PhD, Product Specialist, Agilent Technologies, Inc

The growing emphasis on biotherapeutics within the pharmaceutical industry has created an increasing demand for protein analysis techniques with high precision, sensitivity, and throughput.

The AssayMAP Bravo platform is a walkaway automation solution specifically designed to minimize hands-on time and maximize workflow reproducibility and efficiency for biomolecule sample preparation thereby overcoming the challenges associated with protein sample preparation such as high variability, low sample recovery, and loss of precious samples due to rework.

The software controlling the system was developed with a focus on ease of use for bench scientists so no expertise in automation is required.  The pre-optimized applications including affinity purification, in-solution digestion, desalting, fractionation, intact protein analysis, phosphopeptide enrichment and N-glycan analysis are included in the software and can be seamlessly integrated into multistep process to address a wide variety of sample prep workflows.

The ease of use, pre-optimized applications, and precision engineered into the AssayMAP Bravo platform allow the both new and experienced users to rapidly generate high quality samples for downstream analysis.
